AP Music Theory

Year Offered: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None. As per the AP College Board Course and Exam Description, taking a prior music theory course is NOT a requirement for this class. Students are expected to have a working knowledge of reading music, whether acquired in band, chorus, or orchestra.
Length of course: 1 year
Credit: 1 credit

Course Description: AP Music Theory students will deepen their awareness, appreciation, and understanding of the elements of music, making for more thoughtful and thought-provoking performances for school and community. This course is for students who have a serious interest in music or are interested in pursuing music beyond high school. Students’ ability to read music is fundamental to this course. Summer options will be available to students who need to learn to read music before the fall semester-see the instructor. This course also focuses on critical listening and pattern recognition. Students perform college level work and will be encouraged to take the Advanced Placement exam. Taking AP Music Theory does not guarantee a college credit. A score of 3 or higher is required on the AP exam for college credit to be given.
